Almost 300km northeast of Perth in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, the progressive community of the Shire of Mukinbudin presented Wetdeck Pools with an enormous challenge.

The shire’s Olympic-sized swimming pool was leaking 70,000 litres of water a day. Incorrectly installed, its control joint had failed, leaving the community with no more than an ugly concrete shell in a clay dam. Wetdeck Pools was engaged to core and test samples. The results indicated that there were no issues with the concrete, so the company tendered for refurbishments works.

After winning the tender, Wetdeck Pools’ owner Brian Macdonald designed the new pool utilising the company’s precast deck system. The system was developed after many years of research in an effort to save on project costs. The wet deck module is cast at the company’s factory and is cured for 28 days prior to use. Wetdeck Pools’ construction techniques allow for accuracy of weir points, guaranteeing a product of the highest standards.

Wetdeck Pools increased the depth of the Olympic-sized pool from 105cm to 120cm and 335cm to 350cm and installed a unique set of 2.5m wide pool steps, a new access ramp and custom stepped entry. The access ramp is tiled with Technogrip non-skid tiles, which are smooth, easy to clean and non-abrasive.

The kids’ pool was completely reconstructed and tiled, and is now complete with fountains and laser-cut decals, while the entire Olympic pool was repainted.

The concourse was revamped, with 700m? of limestone paving, which is cool under foot, even in 45-degree heat. Wetdeck Pools also provided a concourse draining system and waterproofed retaining walls. The Shire of Mukinbudin’s community development officer, Ann Brandis, said that the shire has been extremely fortunate to have Brian involved in the redevelopment of its pool.

“Brian has been a dream to work with and his workmanship is second-to-none.

“[I] would highly recommend Wetdeck Pools,” she says. Wetdeck Pools believes that project was a total success and the community now has an outstanding swimming pool to enjoy for many years. The shire is so proud of the new pool that it offers free entry to all visitors who stay in the Mukinbudin Caravan Park.
