EXPERIENCE SHOWS

BUILDING THE IMPOSSIBLE

Pool Developments specialises in individually-designed concrete swimming pools of the finest quality. For the featured project, proprietor and designer Gil Howard drew on more than 36 years of experience to give the owners of this Burswood home a beautiful pool in a space where many believed it was impossible.

This challenging project began with only 4m between the existing brick home and a limestone retaining wall on the boundary. Prior to the excavation, chemical grouting was required to stabilise the soil along the brick walls. Excavation then began, with access less than 1m-wide forcing a hand dig, with the team using wheelbarrows along the side of the building, up some steps and finally out to the street.

During the hand excavation, a large concrete soakwell was discovered in the pool area. After consultation with the client, it was decided that the soakwell would be dug deeper into the soil and remain active, but under the pool floor. Additional downpipe plumbing was arranged without additional cost for the homeowners.

Just 400mm from the house on one side and 400mm from the boundary wall on another, the pool’s swimming area is 3.5m long and 3m wide, with an overall depth of 1.3m. To allow for access through the pool area, the pool features marble stepping stones, placed on a concrete ledge along the boundary side of the pool.

A Duraquartz ‘Sky Blue’ interior has been paired with 200mm x 200mm waterline tiles by Osborne Ceramics, while the 400mm coping pavers by Australis Pavestone complement the colour palette of the home’s exterior.

A 1.2m water blade water feature with LED lighting provides a visual feature that can be enjoyed from inside the home, with the tiled feature wall also providing a privacy screen from the adjacent property. With walls surrounding three sides of the pool, frameless glass fencing was selected for the exposed end.

All Pool Developments projects are individually-designed in consultation with the homeowners, with each project starting with a professional design interview. Contact Gil Howard today to take the first step towards your dream pool.
