Given the limited space of this outdoor area, the homeowners wanted a garden that would be functional for their family, while still incorporating contemporary design. Tim Davies Landscaping has used different levels to create three separate yet integrated areas within the small courtyard space. The pool has been raised to reduce the need for pool fencing, with only one glass gate required. The rear garden is very structural in its layout and has a crisp finish, in keeping with the contemporary style of the home’s architecture. The front garden has a more casual feel, which still ties in with the home’s architecture, but also helps the house to relate better to the street. The owners desired a low-maintenance, native garden for the front yard. The design needed to consider both children and pets, while also incorporating a vegetable garden. The exception to the native garden theme is a feature courtyard tree that was selected for its suitability to the location. The tall, narrow leopard tree has delicate foliage and its deciduous nature allows sun in winter and shade in summer.

The alfresco dining area features Holcim ‘Wattle’ exposed aggregate with a honed finish, which tones in with the exfoliated and brushed ‘Pewter’ basalt pool coping. The highlights of the garden include a feature steel planter, a sunken daybed, and a stone-clad deck seat.
