Australian Outdoor Kitchens

For the featured project the clients required the outdoor kitchen to seamlessly complement the overall theme of the landscaping, while maintaining a high level of functionality as a working outdoor kitchen. This brief was achieved as a result of a collaboration between Matt Lihou of Australian Outdoor Kitchens and Cam Willis of Jacks Yard, who produced a practical yet stylish outdoor space that is truly remarkable.

The combination of polished concrete benches, gloss concrete panel-lined cabinets and an exposed rust-look steel frame is something that proved very challenging to design and construct, but provided an extremely satisfying outcome.

The polished concrete benchtop coupled with the matching exposed aggregate concrete gives a great symmetry to the colour scheme of the design, while also creating a striking contrast against the stark, white gloss concrete cabinetry and rusted exposed beam.

The kitchen is also incredibly functional, providing plenty of bench space for food preparation, cooking and serving. A colour-matched warming drawer means that pre-cooked food can be kept warm when entertaining big crowds. Established in 2008, Australian Outdoor Kitchens services the Perth metropolitan areas, in addition to regional work throughout Western Australia as requested.

Jacks Yard is passionate about designing and constructing unique and personalised outdoor living spaces. For the featured project, the client required an outdoor space that offered family fun and relaxed entertaining. Designed by Cam Willis, the unique landscape also had to accommodate the client’s pre-purchased fibreglass pool.

It was important that the cedar decking boardwalk, which continues up to the shower wall and then across the top of the kitchen as a shade/roof, appear as one continual line of cedar. Cam also wanted the kitchen drawers to appear as though they were floating.

Cam Willis founded Jacks Yard in 2005. Since then the company has expanded its services to include everything from design consultations, through to planning, construction and project management. Jacks Yard is excited to incorporate more outdoor kitchens into its landscapes and work alongside Australian Outdoor Kitchens to create distinctive custom kitchens.

“I love creativity and respect people’s often rare willingness to work outside their standard processes to achieve a unique aesthetic. Australian Outdoor Kitchens are both willing and able, a pleasure to work alongside,” says Willis.
