Martin’s ability to take the client’s brief, together with consideration of the architecture and aspect of the home, and create a landscape design for this family residence in Dalkeith, is exactly what the homeowners wanted; a grand image, yet simple, elegant and low-maintenance.
The design combines large outdoor entertaining spaces, an intimate courtyard ideal for parents to retreat to, and well concealed, accessible utilities areas. the Hampton’s style outdoor entertaining area flows seamlessly into play spaces and the pool area. importantly, parents have uninterrupted vision of their young children at play from the entertaining areas, inside and outside the home. to achieve this, Martin Cuthbert used 3-d technology, to bring the client’s unique visions to life.
Blending beautifully with the streetscape, the impressive landscape was designed around an established Liquidamber tree (Liquidamber styraciflua). Endicott natural split stone paving and cobblestones were selected to blend with the home’s natural stonewall cladding. small deciduous trees and evergreen hedges flank the boundaries, while soft buffalo lawns and gardens form an apron for the expansive timber verandas and stone patio.
The intimate courtyard at the heart of the home offers a sunny winter retreat, or a romantic place to escape to for an evening drink, charmingly screened by a timber wisteria-planted arbour, and complete with illuminated timber bench seating. Magnolias and a weeping sophora frame the up-lit Pacific Mahogany timber bench and split stone planter in the rear garden. the pool boundary wall is covered with star jasmine creepers on stainless steel cables, creating a backdrop to the illuminated mahogany timber pool benches and corten planters.
