The owners of this Perth Home dreamed of a secluded alfresco space where they and their family could retreat from the house and relax. With two teenagers living at home, the design needed to be able to cater for social gatherings of various scales and age groups. The clients also wanted to maintain the character of the existing architecture, while introducing new elements and material to bring a contemporary aesthetic.

The clients were open to innovative ideas and were looking for suggestions on how the space could offer flexibility to accommodate the family’s lifestyle in the years to come. Tim Davies Landscaping has responded to the brief by creating a multi-purpose space with different entertaining areas including a pool terrace, a decked patio area, a raised lunch terrace, a decked pool lounge and a steel structure. The proportions of the steel structure were extremely important in the design, not only to ensure the structure did not appear too heavy, but also to allow light into the space, while screening the rear boundary.

The existing pool was renovated to include a new in-pool bench seat for watching outdoor movies projected onto the house from the pavilion. Clean lines and simple, efficient forms address the site spatially, while subtle details, colours and materials fuse the internal and external features of the house and reflect the personalities of the clients and their family.

Bold, mass, low-maintenance planting schemes were used, including citrus trees, French lavender, star jasmine, rosemary and thyme. As with all Tim Davies Landscaping projects, water-wise subsurface irrigation was used in all of the planted areas. Stake lights, deck lights and bollards combine to create an ambient atmosphere, while furnishings from Eco Outdoor ensure the retreat is a comfortable place to relax.
