South Sea Landscapes
This outstanding outdoor area was designed by Rohan Randles of South Sea Landscapes. The clients’ brief was to create a locally landscaped space with native plants and a culinary garden. The clients also wanted the unsightly granite stones removed from the existing landscaping.
The expert team at South Sea Landscapes achieved the ideal outdoor space by using materials, native plants and locally made products that are best suited to the South-West area. A variety of complementary materials such as stone, timber and steel were also used.
A selection of native grass trees, local plants like kangaroo paw, conostylis and ficinia nodosa were incorporated into the landscaping. Local shrubs such as pimelea, callothamnus, kunzea and banksia also feature in this native garden.
South Sea Landscapes repurposed the existing granite stones and expertly reworked them back into the landscaping, which the clients loved.
The culinary garden features citrus trees, dwarf stone fruits and avocados, as well as a variety of vegetables and herbs. The vegetable boxes were made from reject jarrah railway sleepers, which look fantastic.
The primary function of the native garden was to introduce more native species into the space, so that it attracts more wildlife into the area. The clients have a love for wildlife and nature, so they were thrilled with the result.
The water-efficient garden includes hardy native perennials, shrubs and trees, which don’t require additional watering. The lawn was reduced to a smaller size and soil amendments were used to further reduce water consumption.
While the block was quite small and access was limited, there were no architectural challenges that the team at South Sea Landscapes couldn’t overcome. Randles says the project’s success was undoubtedly due to the excellent clients and builders, who made the entire process run as smoothly as possible.
